06/05/2015
Frederick Community College hosted Army veteran and best-selling author Wes Moore for an event to celebrate armed forces on June 15.

The 7 p.m. event in the JBK Theater, Visual and Performing Arts Center featured a keynote address by Moore, as well as the presentation of colors and the national anthem.

“This was a special community event where we could all come together to celebrate the many men and women who protect our country through their selfless service,” said Shuan Butcher, event organizer. “We were thrilled to have such a well-known veteran and author join us to share his story.” The event was co-sponsored by the Brunswick Veterans Day Parade Committee, Plamondon Hospitality Partners, and FCC.

Moore, a paratrooper and Captain in the United States Army, served a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. His first book, “The Other Wes Moore,” is New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller that conveys the importance of individual decisions alongside community support. Moore’s most recent book, “The Work,” shines light on his path to discovering meaning in his work through service and profiles 12 inspiring people who have found their mission while uplifting their communities.

Moore has also served as a White House fellow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and serves on the board of the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America. He is the founder of STAND!, an organization that works with Baltimore youth involved in the criminal justice system.

Copies of “The Work” were available for purchase and signing after the program. The event was free and open to the public.
