04/21/2015
Frederick, Md. -- Frederick Community College will hold its first Distinguished Artist Awards ceremony this week to honor exceptional alumni of its arts programs.

A light reception is planned in the lobby of the Mary Condon Hodgson Art Gallery at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, followed by a program in the Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at 6:45 p.m.

The ceremony will recognize five former students, one from each of the FCC art disciplines, who excelled as students and continue to excel in their respective fields.

“Our arts programs are a vital and vibrant part of our campus and allow our students to follow their creative interests,” said Paula Chipman, chair of the Communications, Humanities and Arts department and associate professor of music. “We are thrilled to honor these alumni who continue to make FCC proud and serve as role models for current and future students.”

The award recipients are:

Jonathan Redding (Drama) – Actor
Erin Tinney (Design) – Senior Graphic Designer, Jean Peterson Designs
Mike Stashik (Digital Media/TV) – Director, Orioles Productions/Baltimore Orioles
Rick Heffner (Art) – Artist/Illustrator
Rick Martinez (Music) – Percussionist

In addition to the alumni awards, community members Robert and Kimberly Brenengen will be honored with the 2015 Patron of the Arts award. The Brenengens were instrumental in working with the George L. Shields Foundation to launch a music scholarship program for students six to 18 years old.

Following the awards ceremony, the FCC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Howard Burns, will perform its concert, “Frank Sinatra’s Songbook,” at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and free to FCC students and staff with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the Theater Box Office the evening of the performance.
