FCC Moving Mountains Series Welcomes Korey Shorb on Feb. 21
02/13/2018
Korey Shorb, founder of the Up & Out Foundation, will be the featured speaker at the FCC Moving Mountains speaker series Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the JBK Theater, Visual & Performing Arts Center.

The monthly series features inspiring professionals who share their life experiences and encourage teens and young adults to set the bar high in all areas of their lives. All sessions are free and open to the public.

Shorb has dedicated his life to giving back and helping others who struggle with addiction as he once did – he’s been sober since April 2008, and graduated from the Frederick County Drug Court Program.

“Sharing my story is a key to unlocking someone else’s prison,” said Shorb. “Even at 10 years sober, I still chase my recovery like I used to chase drugs. I'm proof you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it and are determined. I used to make mountains out of molehills and today I’ve learned to turn mountains into molehills. Usually during my talk I will explain what it’s like to live the life of an active heroin user and its treacherous grip that it had on me. But at the same time the confidence and freedom that I’ve gained from making it out.”

In addition to heading the Up & Out Foundation, Shorb has a prolific record of serving the community including with the Frederick County Substance Abuse Council, The Youth Ranch, Heroin Strategic Planning Committee, Mountain Manor Treatment Center, and with various police agencies. Shorb also recently worked with the Frederick County Health Department as a Community Health Outreach Worker in the Parole & Probation office. Shorb is a certified Recovery Coach, completed the addictions program at FCC, and earned Alcohol & Drug Trainee Status with the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

Shorb earned the Special Appreciation award and Volunteer of the Year award from the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office. He also received the Second Chance DoGood-er Award, and has garnered commendations from local, state, and national officials.

There is no pre-registration required to attend the Moving Mountains series. Students sign in when they arrive, and those who attend three sessions in an academic year will receive a certificate of participation and leadership. In addition to Shorb, the final Moving Mountains speakers this spring are:

• March 21 – LTC Brian Moore, Scientist, US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Lab, Fort Detrick
• April 11 – Noah Grove, Paralympian, 2017-18 U.S. Hockey National Sled Team member
