Frederick Community College is hosting a free Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training course for higher education personnel who oversee emergency planning operations on August 2-4, 2016.
 
“The hazards facing higher education institutions today are complex and unpredictable,” said Kathy Francis, Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management at FCC. “Having a comprehensive emergency plan set in place is critical for employee and student safety. This training opportunity will give regional higher education leaders the chance to discuss emerging threats and best practices to prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from an emergency event.”
 
The three-day course, titled Multi-Hazard Emergency Management for Higher Education (LO363), is designed to be delivered to teams of campus personnel who are responsible for creating, reviewing, implementing, and exercising emergency operations plans (EOPs). The target audience for this course is people who have traditional response or strategic experience, but minimal experience in emergency management planning. The course will primarily include interactive presentations coupled with numerous individual and group exercises.
 
Topics to be covered include:

• An overview of emergency management
• Identifying hazards and using a risk assessment process
• Managing your Emergency Operations Center (EOC) using ICS (Incident Command System)
• Partnering with your internal and external community
• Developing and/or revising your Emergency Operations Plan
• Training and testing the plans 

It is recommended that each institution brings between four and eight team members. The composition of the participating campus team is decided by each institution attending. Ideal campus personnel include campus administrators, risk managers, public information officers, security or public safety officers, counselors, faculty and student representatives, and employees from facilities management, student affairs, and information technology departments. 
 
External stakeholders including community first responders, city/county emergency management, and community law enforcement can be a part of a team. The training is also open to K-12 education personnel.
