Learning Commons Dedication Ceremony Scheduled for March 30
03/28/2016
Frederick Community College will hold a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Learning Commons at 11 a.m. on March 30.

The Learning Commons is a welcoming and flexible research and learning environment that provides convenient access to academic support services, study spaces, and technology in order to promote collaboration and inspire academic excellence.

The space opened earlier this year after renovation work to what was previously the library. The new facility combines the Tutoring and Writing Center together in the same space as library services, a change that will make it more convenient for students to access numerous academic services.

The Learning Commons was planned and constructed to meet the various needs of all students. The planning team conducted surveys that asked students questions about their study needs, library use, and what they would like to see in the new space. Many aspects of the Learning Commons are a result of student input, including a 70 percent increase in group study space and a 20 percent increase in quiet study space. The space is also home to the Digital MakerSpace, which gives students a place for multimedia creativity.

The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on March 30 will take place in the Learning Commons foyer, located on the second floor of Linganore Hall. Remarks will be given by President Elizabeth Burmaster, Board of Trustees Chair Myrna Whitworth, and other College leaders. Learning Commons staff will be available to give tours following the ceremony.
