Meaghan L. Delawter, Esq., local lawyer and founder of d|law, will speak at Frederick Community College (FCC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 as part of the Moving Mountains Speaker Series.
Delawter’s talk is titled, “Leap…even when you can’t see the net.” It will focus on the idea of moving past the fear of failure in order to find new opportunities and reach your potential.
The event is the first of the 2019-2020 Moving Mountains series. The monthly series features inspiring professionals who share their life experiences and encourage teens and young adults to set the bar high in all areas of their lives.
Letting go of fear is a concept Delawter wishes she had understood when she was growing up. As a self-described former perfectionist, Delawter said she was so focused on achieving perfection that it stunted her growth. The fear of failure limited her opportunities for new experiences, something she says is important for adolescent development.
It wasn’t until she read a book about chasing dreams and moving past fear that she realized it was time to make a change in her professional life. After working for five years doing litigation law for firms in Frederick, Delawter took a leap to start her own firm, which she did in 2016.
“I was experiencing a lot of self-doubt and had a lack of confidence in what I was capable of doing at that point in my life,” Delawter said. “When I realized that fear was driving my decisions, I worked to overcome that, and it opened up so many doors for me. Since then, I’ve been able to start, run, and grow my own business. It’s been life changing.”
Delawter, a Catoctin High School graduate, grew up in Thurmont. She graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and sociology and graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Her law firm, d|law, specializes in family law, particularly divorce, child custody, child support, and estate planning and administration.

Top 5 Young Professionals and Frederick Magazine’s
People to Watch. She was recognized in 2019 as a Super Lawyer Rising Star, a designation given to only 2.5% of attorneys in the State of Maryland.
Moving Mountain speaker sessions are free and open to the public and will take place in the JBK Theater, located inside the Visual & Performing Arts Center on campus. No registration is required to attend. Teens and young adults who attend and sign in for three of the six sessions in an academic year are eligible to receive a certificate of leadership and participation.

- March 18 – James Hatch, FCC Cybersecurity and Computer Science Program Manager
