PASS Program Celebrates New Class with Completion Ceremony
08/10/2017
The Partnership to Achieving Student Success (PASS) program at Frederick Community College will mark the end of its summer session with a completion ceremony on Friday, August 11.

The ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room H202-203, located on the second floor of the Student Center.

“This program gives hardworking students, many who are first generation college students, some extra support on their paths to success and helps with their transition into college,” said Chianti Blackmon, Director of Multicultural Student Services. “Every FCC student has different goals and different challenges, and PASS is one of the many student success initiatives we offer that meet students where they are to help them reach their full potential.”

The PASS program works to reduce the number of students in developmental courses by providing recent high school graduates who have tested into at least one developmental course the chance to work closely with faculty and staff during their transition into college.

The program began with a two-week summer session that started Aug. 1. During the summer session, students work on their reading, writing, and math skills and participate in workshops on career exploration and test taking skills. They also take part in team building projects that connect them to services on campus. At the end of the session, students are able to retake placement tests and register for the fall semester.

After the summer program, participants will continue to meet with their PASS advisor monthly to develop goals, track their progress in classes, and discuss any issues they are having as a new college student. They will also participate in continuing workshops and are encouraged to become actively engaged with campus events and activities.

The PASS program has been instrumental in the success of nearly 300 students since its inception in 2011.

There are 39 students in this year’s program. During the ceremony on Friday, students will receive certificates and hear from professors and other College leaders who were involved in the program. Professors who taught PASS courses will also give out recognition awards.
