11/05/2015
Charlie Smith, State’s Attorney for Frederick County and a successful triathlete, will speak to teens and young adults about making good life decisions on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Frederick Community College. The presentation is free and open to the public and part of the college’s Moving Mountains speaker series.

His presentation, “Moving Mountains that Move,” will cover making good decisions now that will last through a lifetime of change, and reaching beyond one’s perceived limits. It will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the JBK Theater of the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

The six-part series runs through April 2016 and features a half hour to 40-minute presentation, followed by a question and answer session. In this first year of the series, topics by presenters will include keys to succeeding in life, expecting and overcoming obstacles, believing in yourself, following your passion, and transitioning into your career.

FCC is hosting the monthly speaker series to encourage teens and young adults to set the bar high in their professional choices, finances, relationships, and life ambitions. The Moving Mountains speaker series features exceptional professionals who share their stories and encourage teens to reach their potential. The series theme is "Get the most out of life, so life can get the most out of you."

Elected in 2006, Smith is the State’s Attorney for Frederick County. He began his career as a prosecutor in Baltimore City in 1988, and later became Chief of the Special Victims Unit in Frederick.  He was appointed Deputy State’s Attorney in 1999, and as second in command, handled his Office’s high profile violent crime and death penalty cases.  He also supervised chiefs of all felony trial units.

Smith litigated the first computer crimes case in Maryland and obtained the longest sentence given to an individual defendant in the state (450 years).

He has been a faculty member at the National College of District Attorneys since 1999, and has taught locally at Frederick Community College and Mount St. Mary’s University.

Smith’s presentation will be the second in the six-part series. Tony Checchia kicked off the series in October. Upcoming presentations in the series include:

• Sherrie Johnson (Jan. 20, 2016), a former Baltimore news reporter and anchor who is now in public relations in Prince George’s County. She will discuss professional transitions and finding your niche.
• Julie Gaver (Feb. 3, 2016), a professional/motivational speaker who lives in Frederick County. Her presentation includes “positivity and attitude, and how to handle the stresses that come with school and life.”
• Bob Viti (March 2, 2016), a longtime Frederick County educator who is currently at Catoctin High School. He is a positive role model and soccer coach who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Viti will discuss staying positive and overcoming hardships in life.
