State’s Attorney for Frederick County to Discuss Servant Leadership at FCC
04/04/2019
Charlie Smith, State’s Attorney for Frederick County, will speak at Frederick Community College (FCC)
at 7 p.m. on April 10 as part of the Moving Mountains Speaker Series.

Smith’s talk, “We, Not Me…The Key to High Performance,” will focus on servant leadership. Smith says his own desire to serve to lead is the reason for much of his personal and professional growth and accomplishment.

The event is the last of the 2018-2019 Moving Mountains series. The monthly series features inspiring professionals who share their life experiences and encourage teens and young adults to set the bar high in all areas of their lives.

Smith says while servant leadership is a concept that has been passed down generation after generation through principals of government and military, it is an idea that has a lot of relevance for students.

“Students can also benefit from moving to a 'we' not 'me' culture,” Smith said. “It works everywhere as people consistently want to give their all to leaders who put the interests of common good – the team and/or objective – before their own interests.”

First elected in 2006, Smith is currently serving his fourth term as State’s Attorney for Frederick County. He started as a prosecutor in Baltimore City in 1988, and later became Chief of the Special Victims Unit in Frederick.  He was appointed Deputy State’s Attorney in 1999.

Smith has been a faculty member at the National College of District Attorneys since 1999, and has also taught at FCC and Mount St. Mary’s University.

The sessions are free and open to the public and will take place in the JBK Theater, located inside the Visual & Performing Arts Center on campus. No registration is required to attend. Teens and young adults who attend and sign in for three of the six sessions in an academic year are eligible to receive a certificate of leadership and participation.
