“Shark Tank” Style Challenge for FCC Student Business Plan Contest
01/30/2024
M&T Bank is proudly sponsoring Frederick Community College’s (FCC) 11th Annual Business Plan Contest for ALL currently enrolled FCC students. The contest provides students the opportunity to showcase their prowess as entrepreneurs while competing for scholarship prizes awarded through the FCC Foundation, Inc.

Similar to the process and format seen on the popular TV show “Shark Tank,” three contest finalists will present a business plan to a panel of five judges. The judges then select the first, second, and third place winners, who receive scholarships in the amount of $2,500, $1,500, or $1,000, respectively. The awarded scholarships may be applied toward continued studies at FCC or toward further studies at a four-year transfer college of their choice.

“We are thankful for the 11 straight years of partnering with M&T Bank,” said Larry Devan, FCC assistant professor of business and Business Plan Contest facilitator. “They have been extremely supportive in helping our students sharpen their entrepreneurial skills and rewarding them with scholarships to advance their educational goals.”

This year’s panel of judges includes M&T Bank Branch Manager Nana Yaw Gyamfi and Assistant Vice President Amy L. Killian; Owner of The Garage Food Truck, Restaurant, and Bar, Rita Dorsey; President & CEO of Details Matter Bookkeeping & Advisory, Katie Hanna; and Owner of Mjach Designs, Melissa Lentz.

All currently enrolled FCC students, no matter what program of study, are invited to develop a business plan and apply for the contest. Individuals as well as teams of two students can enter. Teams will split the scholarship awards equally. Two FCC adjunct business instructors will serve as mentors for the student finalists. The top three finalists will be notified in mid-April and finalist presentations will be held on May 1.
