David Martin was a longtime faculty member who was devoted to FCC and his students. He served as an assistant professor of sign language for 17 years. The loss of David is felt deeply by many on our campus and the larger community, where he was known for his sense of humor, congeniality, and the significant impact he had on his students. His ability to connect with students was evident during the many trips he took them on as the faculty advisor of the Read My Hands Club and during the American Sign Language (ASL) Immersion get-aways, where he captivated them with his games and stories by the fireside.
We know that David’s impact extended far beyond the FCC campus, where he was a revered figure in the local Deaf community for his continual advocacy and support. He tirelessly advocated for services to be made available to members of the Deaf community and his work ensured the Deaf community had a place in Frederick where they were seen, known, and valued.
His presence in the classroom led many of his students to fall in love with sign language, further growing the interest in and appreciation of the Deaf community.
