Here are just some of the many ways in which community colleges in Maryland add value to our state and local communities. Frederick Community College is proud contributor to these benefits.
70% of Maryland freshmen and sophomore college students are enrolled in one of Maryland’s 16 community colleges.
Frederick Community College is an excellent choice for many high school graduates. FCC offers more than 85 academic programs for students planning to earn a degree, transfer to a four-year college, or begin a career.
Each year, Maryland’s community colleges enroll a diverse population of nearly 500,000 students - – 150,000 in credit programs and 350,000 in continuing education and workforce development courses.
With teaching and learning as our primary focus, FCC prepares an increasingly diverse student body to complete their goals of workforce preparation, transfer, career development, and personal enrichment with quality, innovative lifelong learning. More than 16,000 students of all ages take courses at Frederick Community College each year.
At the very core of the missions of community colleges is accessibility to a diverse population. Community colleges effectively cater to those working full-time jobs, caring for an aging or ill family member, those serving in the military, and many other life circumstances. We do so through innovative day, evening, weekend, and 24/7 online opportunities.
FCC recognizes the different learning needs and preferences of students and offers instruction in flexible learning formats that include day, evening, weekend, online, and hybrid options. In addition, FCC offers current high school students access to college courses through its Open Campus and High School-Based Dual Enrollment programs.
More than 50% of Maryland’s community college students transfer to in-state colleges and universities to complete their baccalaureate degrees.
With 71% of FCC students planning to transfer each year on average, our dedicated Career & Transfer counselors continue to provide assistance, resources and guidance throughout the process.
Maryland’s community colleges have dozens of transfer agreements with colleges and universities, both in-state and out-of-state, that guarantee the maximum number of credits will transfer and save students thousands of dollars in achieving their bachelor’s degrees.
Frederick Community College maintains nearly 80 articulation agreements with four-year institutions. Each semester, FCC hosts a Transfer Fair with 40+ four-year colleges and universities in attendance as well as weekly visits by admissions representatives from four-year colleges in our area.
There are 156 non-credit program options at Maryland’s community colleges that meet professional licensing and certification requirements for in-demand jobs within our local communities.
FCC features affordable, flexible and relevant training options to students seeking direct entry into the workforce. With 19 program areas of concentration available, select courses also offer industry-recognized training for licensure and career certification at state and national levels.
The average student-to-faculty ratio at Maryland’s community colleges is 16:1, which encourages a collegiate environment of increased student/faculty engagement.
Smaller class sizes at Frederick Community College provide an individualized learning environment and personalized attention from instructors.
Maryland’s community colleges engage diverse student populations through enriching co-curricular activities and clubs as well as with successful, competitive men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic programs as part of the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
The FCC Center for Student Engagement provides exciting opportunities to our diverse student population during a wide array of social, cultural, and educational offerings as well as special events, leadership programs and applied co-curricular activities. And our award-winning student athletes compete on baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball teams in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Nearly 90% of alumni from Maryland’s 16 community colleges remain within the state, contributing to local and state economies purchasing goods and services as engaged tax-paying citizens.
According to a recent independent study, $299.8 million in “added value" has been contributed to the Frederick County economy from FCC alumni.
With a 40% increase in community college completions in the past ten years, the cost of higher education has skyrocketed to the 2nd highest consumer debt behind mortgages. Students starting at a Maryland community college can save 60% compared to public four year colleges, 76% compared to for-profit colleges, and 91% compared to Maryland private colleges’ tuition costs.
Each year, full-time FCC students taking 12 credit hours each semester pay nearly $12,000 less in annual tuition and fees when compared to a four-year public college and nearly $33,000 annual savings when paralleled with a four-year private college.
Community College students learn from an accomplished student-focused faculty. Additionally, student support is one of the ways community colleges stand out among other higher education institutions. Typical services include academic and career advising, counseling, tutorials, health care, financial aid, and library and computer lab services.
Personalized support available to FCC students includes Career & Transfer Services, Adult Services, Multicultural Student Services, and Disability Access Services (DAS), as well as Veteran and Military Services. Additional student support is offered through Counseling & Advising and Financial Aid while academic learning facilities include the Library Learning Commons, Testing Center, STEM Learning Center and multiple computer lab facilities.
Nearly $10 billion is pumped into Maryland’s economy every year by our 16 community colleges. (Equivalent to employment of 150,000 people)
Frederick Community College and its students added $348 million in income to the Frederick County economy, approximately equal to 3.0% of the county’s total gross regional product.
By 2020, 69% of Maryland’s jobs will require a postsecondary education. Community colleges are the largest single workforce trainer in Maryland.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, 1,112 students earned 1,167 degrees or academic certificates at Frederick Community College.
Due to Maryland’s community college students and their completion, Maryland will see avoided social costs amounting to $494 million annually, equal to the sum of avoided costs related to health, crime, and unemployment.
For every dollar society invests in an education at Frederick Community College, an average of $7.00 in benefits will accrue to Maryland over the course of the students’ careers.
Maryland community colleges offer degree, certificate and skills training programs to support workforce development for the region’s fastest growing industries such as nursing, allied health, cybersecurity, and hospitality.
Nursing, STEM and cybersecurity are among the top five FCC programs with the highest enrollment. Additionally, popular new programs at Frederick Community College include addictions counseling and hospitality management.
Graduating from one of Maryland’s community colleges has proven to have a profound impact on earnings. The median income for graduates more than doubles three years after completion when compared to student earnings one-year prior to graduation.
According to a recent economic impact study, in return for the monies invested in the college, FCC students will receive a present value of$355.3 million in increased earnings over their working lives. This translates to a return of $3.00 in higher future earnings for every $1 that students invest in their education. The average annual return for students is 13.1%.
